lavish Lashes

I don’t take a lot of time to do my makeup each morning before work.  To give myself 10 more minutes of snooze in the am prior to my 45 minute commute, I limit my eyes to just eyeliner and mascara.  Mascara makes the biggest difference.  I’ve tried dozens of brands and about two years ago I found the perfect one.

People often ask me what mascara I use.  My girlfriend Becky texted me the other day asking again while she was out shopping.  Lucky for you, her text inspired me to share with all of you!  The mascara I use is Hypnose by Lancome.  It lengthens and adds volume without clumping.  I love it.

I even used the waterproof version for my wedding day and didn’t have to add any false lashes.

Sorry to make that photo so gigantic.  I just wanted you to get a good glimpse of the lashes.

So, there ya go.  I 100% recommend it! You can order a bottle online or grab one from any Lancome location.  I get mine at Macys.

7 Wonders of the Web
By • Filed In: Fashion, Makeup, Wonders of the Web

I had so much fun with last weeks 7 Wonders of the Web post, that I decided to go for round two. But since this week has sorta turned into Beauty Week, I thought I’d keep with it and do a  7 Wonders Beauty/Fashion Edition. So here are some things floating around the web that I found interesting:

Lyndar the Merciless

  • Ever get bored with how you wear your scarf? Here is 25 ways to wear a scarf in 4 1/2 minutes. It’s such a creative video. Major props to you Wendy!

Kendi Everyday

  • This poppy color is seriously becoming a favorite of mine. Fresh enough for spring and summer, but deep and rich enough in color for fall and winter. It’s once again reminding me to go pick up Nars Semi Matte Lipstick in Heat Wave.
  • Don’t you wish you could get volume like this? Well maybe you already know how, I shouldn’t assume otherwise. But I know I could for sure use some help in the volume department. There’s even a video tutorial.
  • I wonder if Erase Paste by Benefit is as good as I hear. I’ve heard it’s a complete game changer.
  • A very helpful guide to necklace lengths. Now instead of awkwardly trying to measure around my neck, I can just refer to this.

I hope you all have a wonderful and cozy weekend!

This week has turned into an unplanned Beauty Week here on JKR, so I’m just gonna run with it. But I have a confession…yes it does have to do with the theme of the week. Want to know what it is? I sit in the sink when I’m doing my makeup. I’m not kidding, I’m a complete weirdo. Here’s some proof (warning, I am not wearing any makeup in the following pic.)

Don’t say I didn’t warn you about the no makeup thing. At first Jeff said he thought me sitting in the sink was cute and funny. But maybe it was just early on in the relationship and didn’t want to say anything wrong. Or maybe it’s one reason why one of the nicknames Jeff has for me is Monkey… the other being that I sometimes pick things up with my feet. Wow, I’m realllllly showing my true colors here aren’t I? Love it or leave it I guess.

Ok back to the sink thing. I just need to be super close to the mirror when I’m doing my makeup. And I wake up ridiculously early in the morning and am too lazy to stand while doing my makeup. I’m talking 5 am early. The result is me sitting on the edge of the bathroom counter with my feet in the sink. Don’t judge. I would love to have one of those adorable makeup vanities with a cute little chair, mirror, good lighting, and fun compartments to hold all my makeup. Unfortunately for me, living in a small apartment in the city doesn’t really allow for that type of luxury. So until I can have one of these:

Things We Heart

Lonny Magazine

Things We Heart

6th Street Design School

I’ll be doing this:

Wow I’m really all up in that mirror’s business aren’t I? Please tell me someone else has a crazy weird makeup or morning routine? Surely I’m not the only one.

Lip Gloss Over It
By • Filed In: Makeup

Yesterday I posted all about my makeup. But I didn’t talk about one thing, the finishing touch: lip gloss..or lipstick or whatever you use. Truth be told, I’ve never used a whole lotta color on my lips. Some might joke that it’s because my lips are so big that they stand out on their own without any added color. My mom once told me that when I was little my lips took over my face (said in the most loving of ways of course), as in they were oddly disproportionate to the rest of my face. Got a nice mental image of that? Yeah, Bozo the Clown here. Some teasing was thrown my way about it while growing up, so naturally I was somewhat self conscious about them. But lately I’ve grown accustomed to them and almost miss how they for some reason don’t seem as big as they used to. So lately I’ve wanted to start to play with color. Here’s my current collection in rotation.

I know, it’s not much. I really need to up the ante. Smashbox’s O-Gloss is currently my favorite thing ever. It comes out of the tube clear and reacts with your own skin tone to transform into a shade of pink perfect for you. Seriously amazing stuff. They have come out with a new version called O-Gloss Gold  that transforms to your perfect shade of peach. I can’t wait to try that one out. Good old Chap Stick, I’m addicted to it. I have a tube in my desk at work, one in my purse, and one on my nightstand. Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 is a great balm that has a little shine to it. Sephora Fresh Gloss is a fun sheer pink gloss that even has a minty flavor to help freshen your breath. It’s my favorite sheer gloss to just add shine. I have my friend Cassie to thank for introducing it to me. Stilla’s Lip Glaze in Cranberry is currently the only intense color I have at the moment. Here is a pic of me wearing it.

I’ve found it hard to find my perfect shade of red. A lot of the ones I try are either too orange or wash me out. My olive skin is great for a tan in the summer, but proves to be not as fun in the winter. I’ve heard a lot of great things about Nars Semi Matte Lipstick in Heat Wave. A Glamour editor swears it looks good on everyone. I can’t wait to try it.

So has anyone found the perfect shade of red? Any other favorite product? Spill it ladies!

Make Me Up

I have always been a girly girl. Always. I can remember one day as a little girl wanting to go outside and play while wearing one of my favorite dresses. Apparently it was a bit colder than I wanted to admit, because my mom told me it was too chilly and I needed to put on pants. Pants? Noooo I couldn’t give up the dress, not me as a little girl. So instead I put on a pair of legwarmers. Ha! A couple years after that I got a makeup kit for Christmas. It was supposed to be for my dance shows/recitals, but I would sneak it out and sit in front of my mirror to experiment. Then as a teenager, my friends would always come over to my house so I could do their makeup before the big dances. I don’t think Wendy ever did her own makeup for a dance, but we wouldn’t have had it any other way, it was so much fun getting ready together!

The other day I was cleaning out my makeup bag and started thinking about all those makeup memories. So I figured I should share what’s inside.

Yes, it’s a Missoni for Target bag. It one of three small things I could get my hands on. That, file folders, and a phone case. Better than nothing I guess. Clearly I have a lot of makeup, but I must admit, that’s not all of it. Like I said, I’m a girly girl who likes her makeup. I bet you could guess what brad I tend to gravitate towards? You got it, Bobbi Brown. I tend to gravitate towards neutrals, and Bobbi Brown does a nice job of having a wide variety of neutrals but also using pops of color in a sophisticated way.

Here are my key pieces that I use almost every day. My go-to colors. My pièce de résistance.

I use Bobbi Brown’s shimmer wash eye shadow in Beige and Rose Gold, blush in Pale Pink, long wear gel eyeliner in Black Ink, foundation stick in Warm Neutral, and I use her eye shaddow in Mahogany to fill in my eyebrows. Believe it or not, I actually started out as a dance major in college. One day we were taking a stage makeup class and the instructor used me as her example. She pointed out that my eyebrows were so light that on stage it would look like my eyes ran right into my forehead and said I should darken them for shows. Duly noted instructor, duly noted. I have been filling in my brows with eye shadow ever since. It really does make a difference, I highly recommend it.

I also use Physicians Formula bronzer, Laura Mercier eyelash curler (the best ever), Loreal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes, and Make Up For Ever Aqua Smoky Lash waterproof mascara. This is the absolute best waterproof mascara that I have ever used. I used it for my sister’s wedding and there was not one single smudge by the end of the day.

Here is some of the other makeup I use. I don’t necessarily use these every day. But I do use them a lot when I’m dressing up a bit more for cocktails, weddings, other events or some I use in the summer when I don’t need something as heavy.

Bobbi Brown eyeshadow in Heather, slate, and Black. Bobbi Brown, shimmer wash eye shadow in Gunmetal, metallic eye shadow in Gunmetal, corrector in Bisque (for dark under eye circles), tinted eye brighter in Bisque (to highlight the inner corners of the eyes), tinted moisturizing balm in Medium to Dark Tint. As much as I love Bobbi Brown, I do use other brands, I swear. I use some Mac products such as Mac eye shadow in Bronze. I love Kevyn Aucoin creamy moist glow in Tansoleil (I use as blush in the summer). And of course every makeup bag wouldn’t be complete without an eye/lip pencil sharpener.

And now on to the brushes. I keep all of my makeup brushes in a mercury glass cup on my shelf. That way they don’t get smashed or bent out of shape in my bag. It also makes it much easier to grab the one I need instead of fumbling through the bag.

Here are the brushes that I use most often.

Bobbi Brown Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush for the gel eyeliner, a generic eye shadow brush that I’ve had for ages (this one and this one are very similar), Bobbi Brown Eye Brow Brush (perfect when using eye shadow to fill in brows. I personally like shadow better so you don’t get the harsh lines of a pencil), Lancome angled blush brush (but I can’t find it, this one is very similar), Lancome Mineral Powder Foundation Brush (although I use it for bronzer).

And her are most of the brushes that I use in addition to my every single day ones.

Origins Lip Brush, the next two brushes are B.E. Beauty brushes but I can’t seem to find where to purchase them (here-but with one point instead of two and here are similar ones), Bobbi Brown Eye Definer Brush, and the Nars Smudge Brush. It’s a great brush for creating those smudgy smoky eyes, using it in the creases of the lid, or to smudge or apply smoky liner.

And to keep my brushes clean I use Bobbi Brown Conditioning Brush Cleanser. It really does make a difference in how long your brushes last. I usually clean mine once a month to get all the residue off and to help reshape them. I do clean the ultra fine eye liner brush every time I use it since the gel eyeliner can dry and get all sorts of nasty on it if you don’t.

So that’s about it. My makeup bag in a nutshell. What’s your favorite makeup line or product?
