Make Me Up
By • Filed In: Makeup

I have always been a girly girl. Always. I can remember one day as a little girl wanting to go outside and play while wearing one of my favorite dresses. Apparently it was a bit colder than I wanted to admit, because my mom told me it was too chilly and I needed to put on pants. Pants? Noooo I couldn’t give up the dress, not me as a little girl. So instead I put on a pair of legwarmers. Ha! A couple years after that I got a makeup kit for Christmas. It was supposed to be for my dance shows/recitals, but I would sneak it out and sit in front of my mirror to experiment. Then as a teenager, my friends would always come over to my house so I could do their makeup before the big dances. I don’t think Wendy ever did her own makeup for a dance, but we wouldn’t have had it any other way, it was so much fun getting ready together!

The other day I was cleaning out my makeup bag and started thinking about all those makeup memories. So I figured I should share what’s inside.

Yes, it’s a Missoni for Target bag. It one of three small things I could get my hands on. That, file folders, and a phone case. Better than nothing I guess. Clearly I have a lot of makeup, but I must admit, that’s not all of it. Like I said, I’m a girly girl who likes her makeup. I bet you could guess what brad I tend to gravitate towards? You got it, Bobbi Brown. I tend to gravitate towards neutrals, and Bobbi Brown does a nice job of having a wide variety of neutrals but also using pops of color in a sophisticated way.

Here are my key pieces that I use almost every day. My go-to colors. My pièce de résistance.

I use Bobbi Brown’s shimmer wash eye shadow in Beige and Rose Gold, blush in Pale Pink, long wear gel eyeliner in Black Ink, foundation stick in Warm Neutral, and I use her eye shaddow in Mahogany to fill in my eyebrows. Believe it or not, I actually started out as a dance major in college. One day we were taking a stage makeup class and the instructor used me as her example. She pointed out that my eyebrows were so light that on stage it would look like my eyes ran right into my forehead and said I should darken them for shows. Duly noted instructor, duly noted. I have been filling in my brows with eye shadow ever since. It really does make a difference, I highly recommend it.

I also use Physicians Formula bronzer, Laura Mercier eyelash curler (the best ever), Loreal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes, and Make Up For Ever Aqua Smoky Lash waterproof mascara. This is the absolute best waterproof mascara that I have ever used. I used it for my sister’s wedding and there was not one single smudge by the end of the day.

Here is some of the other makeup I use. I don’t necessarily use these every day. But I do use them a lot when I’m dressing up a bit more for cocktails, weddings, other events or some I use in the summer when I don’t need something as heavy.

Bobbi Brown eyeshadow in Heather, slate, and Black. Bobbi Brown, shimmer wash eye shadow in Gunmetal, metallic eye shadow in Gunmetal, corrector in Bisque (for dark under eye circles), tinted eye brighter in Bisque (to highlight the inner corners of the eyes), tinted moisturizing balm in Medium to Dark Tint. As much as I love Bobbi Brown, I do use other brands, I swear. I use some Mac products such as Mac eye shadow in Bronze. I love Kevyn Aucoin creamy moist glow in Tansoleil (I use as blush in the summer). And of course every makeup bag wouldn’t be complete without an eye/lip pencil sharpener.

And now on to the brushes. I keep all of my makeup brushes in a mercury glass cup on my shelf. That way they don’t get smashed or bent out of shape in my bag. It also makes it much easier to grab the one I need instead of fumbling through the bag.

Here are the brushes that I use most often.

Bobbi Brown Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush for the gel eyeliner, a generic eye shadow brush that I’ve had for ages (this one and this one are very similar), Bobbi Brown Eye Brow Brush (perfect when using eye shadow to fill in brows. I personally like shadow better so you don’t get the harsh lines of a pencil), Lancome angled blush brush (but I can’t find it, this one is very similar), Lancome Mineral Powder Foundation Brush (although I use it for bronzer).

And her are most of the brushes that I use in addition to my every single day ones.

Origins Lip Brush, the next two brushes are B.E. Beauty brushes but I can’t seem to find where to purchase them (here-but with one point instead of two and here are similar ones), Bobbi Brown Eye Definer Brush, and the Nars Smudge Brush. It’s a great brush for creating those smudgy smoky eyes, using it in the creases of the lid, or to smudge or apply smoky liner.

And to keep my brushes clean I use Bobbi Brown Conditioning Brush Cleanser. It really does make a difference in how long your brushes last. I usually clean mine once a month to get all the residue off and to help reshape them. I do clean the ultra fine eye liner brush every time I use it since the gel eyeliner can dry and get all sorts of nasty on it if you don’t.

So that’s about it. My makeup bag in a nutshell. What’s your favorite makeup line or product?
